UNION GOVEREMENT ADVISES TO PROVIDE SEPARATE TOILET FOR WOMEN

N.RAJAGOPAL

In the earlier issue of BWU dated 12th February 2022 it was reported about the initiative taken by S. Venkatesan, Honourable Member of Parliament, Madurai Constituency at the behest of Bank Employees Federation of India in the matter of separate toilet for women at the bank branches / offices.

The issue was raised by  S Venkatesan in the Lok Sabha under Rule 377 which was promptly replied by the Government vide its letter D O F No.15/02/20022-COORD dated 09 03 2022 advising all the public sector banks and the scheduled commercial banks to provide separate toilet for women.

It is all the more imperative on the part of the bank employees and officers to ensure that these guidelines from the government are implemented in true spirits. We thank Com S Venkatesan, Honourable Member of Parliament, CPI (M) for having taken up this issue with the appropriate authorities and secured positive response.

MATTER UNDER RULE 377

I have been informed by the Bank Employees Federation of India (BEFI) that many branches and offices of Public sector banks and other banks do not have separate toilets for women. This has been confirmed by the information collected through RTI Act and other sources. It is a shocking issue affecting the dignity of the women.

The necessity for providing the separate toilets for women need not be explained. Our sisters deserve honourable, decent and comfortable working atmosphere in work places and it is their right also. Apart from Women employees, Women customers and other

Women connected with office also require such facility.

I request you to instruct all the Banks- Public Sector, Private Sector, Foreign sector, Cooperative sector, DFls, Payment and Small

Finance Banks – to provide separate toilets for women in all the branches and offices in Madurai and also throughout the country.

S VENKATESAN, CPI (M)

  1. An article in BWU has drawn the attention of the power corridors is to be appreciated. I express my gratitude to com S Venkatesan, honourable MP, who had escalated this issue to Union FM. The bank unions should ensure that the directions of the Union Government is implemented in true spirits.

  2. Indeed a great achievement given the way our Institutions function.Let this not be a paper directive.Separate and clean toilets should be provided at all branches for women and men.

  5. Even for Provision of a separate toilet for women, a basic necessity, a Member of Parliament’s intervention is required only exposes the indifferent attitude and concern of the rulers towards the work force that too in the organised sector.

  6. It is a pity that even after more than seven decades of independence it needs a committed Member of Parliament and a responsible Trade Union like BEFI to make the Union Government issue instructions to banks across the country for providing a separate toilet for women. The movement initiated by CBSU has successfully culminated and as the article rightly advices it is for the employees in respective banks/branches to see that it is implemented
